Tories vows "Nation of Homebuilders" 6 Oct 2009

The Conservative conference in Manchester this week has answered the critics who said they had no solid policies.

Again Housing is the dominant subject with the Shadow Housing Minister Grant Shapps stating how the Conservative would create a "nation of homebuilders".

In his speech to Conservstive Party conference today, Shapps revealed that under a Tory government villages would be granted powers to expand by up to 10% over ten years.

Shapps also revealed that local communities would be rewarded for building homes by receiving match funding of the council tax revenue from the new homes for 6 years.

Shapps said: "We will give people something in return for development. When a community builds more homes, we'll match pound-for-pound the extra money that the area gets through council tax for 6 years.

"For the first time our Local Housing Trusts will give people the power to expand their villages by up to 10% over 10 years. At last people will be able to shape their own communities."

Shapps also criticised the governments record on housebuilding. "Top-down, Soviet style, Labour approach to housing just isn't working. So we'll scrap the unelected Regional Assemblies, abolish the Regional Spatial Strategies and dump the pointless Labour housing targets, because if they haven't delivered by now, they never will."

"In 12 years in power, 10 Housing Acts of Parliament, 9 Housing Ministers and the results are fewer homes built than at any time since the 2nd World War", he said.
